Wurlitza, the "completely strange and completely wonderful" five-piece band from St Germans will play a live soundtrack to classic silent movie Sunrise at the arts centre. The line-up includes guitars, vocals, bass, keyboard, clarinet and percussion, and their carefully orchestrated soundtrack reflects a variety of musical influences – everything from jazz and blues through to ska and pop. Of particular interest to music aficionados will be a mazurka adapted from an original score by Cornish composer Herbert Lanyon, father of artist Peter Lanyon, which will be played for the first time at the screening of Sunrise.
We’re no silent experts, but according to the blurb: ‘Made in 1927 by German Expressionist film maker FW Murnau, Sunrise was one of Hollywood’s most ambitious projects. Groundbreaking filmmaking techniques, distorted sets and expressive lighting demonstrated what was possible near the end of the silent era. Murnau was given complete artistic freedom to make the film, which has become one of the most revered of all time. It tells the story of a countryman and his wife whose lives are invaded by a femme fatale from the city.’
The drums start to roll from 8.30pm on Saturday July 5. Tickets are £8 and advance booking is recommended.
